United Airlines Now Has Non-Binary Gender Booking Options

CHICAGO (CBS) — United announced it would be the first U.S. airline offering non-binary gender options for booking flights.

Customers can choose from Mr., Ms. or Mx. when they make a reservation and in United’s MileagePlus customer profile.

The Chicago-based company said it has worked with the Human Rights Campaign and the Trevor Project for employee training initiatives, including how to instruct United employees about preferred pronouns.

According to the National Center for Transgender Equality “People whose gender is not male or female use many different terms to describe themselves, with non-binary being one of the most common. None of these terms mean exactly the same thing, but all speak to an experience of gender that is not simply male or female.”

“United is excited to share with our customers, whether they identify along the binary of male or female or not, that we are taking the steps to exhibit our care for them while also providing additional employee training to make us even more welcoming for all customers and employees,” said Toby Enqvist, Chief Customer Officer for United.

LaSaia Wade is the executive director of Brave Space Alliance, a Chicago non-profit and the first trans-led and black-led LGBT center on the city’s South Side. She welcomed the company’s decision and said it’s an opportunity for a teaching moment.

“This will be a chance for people to say ‘What is that? Let me do some research on what that is,’” Wade said. “And it will bridge some gaps as well as making some spaces acceptable for people to be more comfortable. It’s fine not to have education around it, but respect people’s gender pronouns.”

Wade said her organization, along with AffinityCare and the Chicago Black Gay Men’s Caucus met with United Airlines twice last year to discuss issues related to the LGBTQ community.

“I’m excited to see United Airlines take the lead on this,” Wade said “It allows them to be more inclusive and it opens the door for more business for United and hopefully other airlines and companies throughout the country will do the same.”

According to a recent CNN story which cited a study in the Journal Paediatrics, more U.S. teens are rejecting gender identities such as ‘boy’ or ‘girl.’

“At the Human Rights Campaign, we believe being acknowledged as the gender you identify with is part of treating everyone with dignity and respect,” said Beck Bailey, acting director of the Workplace Equality Program. “By providing non-binary gender selection for ticketing and the gender-inclusive honorific ‘Mx’ in user profiles, United Airlines is taking an important step forward for non-binary inclusion.”

MillerCoors Sues Anheuser-Busch Over Corn Syrup Ads

(AP) — MillerCoors has filed a lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch, saying its St. Louis-based rival wants to “frighten” people away from Miller Lite and Coors Light by claiming those beers have corn syrup.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Wisconsin federal court but the feud between the country’s two largest brewers began when Anheuser-Busch aired commercials making the corn syrup claim during this year’s Super Bowl .

Corn syrup is a fermentation aid used by several brewers , including Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors. But no corn syrup remains in the beers once fermentation is complete.

Chicago-based MillerCoors says Anheuser-Busch is preying on health conscious consumers who have negative connotations of corn syrup, sometimes confusing it with the high-fructose corn syrup in sodas. MillerCoors wants a judge to order Anheuser-Busch to stop the ads.

Anheuser-Busch says it stands by its campaign and won’t change it.

Candy Crush Vs. Mortal Kombat For Video Game Hall Of Fame

(AP) — The World Video Game Hall of Fame fielded thousands of nominations for the Class of 2019 from more than 100 countries, hall officials said after narrowing the field to 12.

“Will ‘Centipede’ devour the competition? Can ‘Mortal Kombat’ fight its way to victory? Will ‘Microsoft Windows Solitaire’ play its cards correctly?” the Hall of Fame said in a news release revealing this year’s 12 finalists. “Can ‘Super Mario Kart’ speed past the finish line? Is ‘NBA 2K’ a slam dunk?”

The other contenders are: “Candy Crush,” ”Colossal Cave Adventure,” ”Dance Dance Revolution,” ”Half-Life,” ”Myst,” ”Sid Meier’s Civilization” and “Super Smash Bros. Melee.”

The World Video Game Hall of Fame , housed at The Strong museum in Rochester, recognizes individual electronic games of all types — arcade, console, computer, hand-held and mobile. Those deemed worthy of the hall have left a mark on the video game industry or pop culture and been popular over time and across countries.

Last year, “John Madden Football,” ”Spacewar!” ”Tomb Raider” and “Final Fantasy VII” were honored. The Class of 2019 will be the fifth group to go into the hall since it was established in 2015.

Newzoo analysts estimated the video game market at nearly $140 billion in 2018, with more than 2.3 billion active gamers. The numbers dwarf the $43.4 billion in revenue generated by the American film industry.

The 12 Hall of Fame finalists span decades, gaming platforms and countries of origin, but all have had an impact, Jon-Paul Dyson, director of The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games, said in the news release.

“Whether it’s a true pioneer like ‘Colossal Cave Adventure,’ a mobile gaming phenomenon like ‘Candy Crush’ that’s been played by hundreds of millions, or a game like ‘Mortal Kombat’ that pushed boundaries and changed the landscape of the gaming industry,” Dyson said, “they’re among the most influential games of all time.”

Facebook Stored Millions Of Passwords In Plain Text

(AP) — Facebook had stored millions of user passwords in plain text for years, the social media company confirmed on Thursday after a security researcher posted about the issue online.

Facebook says there is no evidence that employees had abused access to this data.

The company says the passwords were stored on internal company servers, no outsiders could access them. But the incident reveals a huge oversight for the company amid a slew of bruises and stumbles in the last couple of years.

The security blog KrebsOnSecurity says some 600 million Facebook users may have had their passwords stored in plain text. Facebook said in a blog post Thursday it will likely notify “hundreds of millions” of Facebook Lite users, millions of Facebook users and tens of thousands of Instagram users.
