New Lawsuit Says Uber Broke Law By Covering Up Massive Data Breach

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) — Uber’s massive global data breach is now the source of yet another multi-million dollar lawsuit. Pennsylvania’s attorney general is suing the San Francisco-based ride-hailing company, saying it broke state law when it failed to notify drivers for a year that hackers stole their personal information. Pennsylvania joins other US Attorneys General and customers who have filed similar complaints. The breach happened in October 2016 and reached global proportions, impacting the private data of some 57 million customers and drivers around the world, not just in Pennsylvania. Hackers stole the names, email addresses and phone numbers of 50 million Uber riders, and 7 million drivers, according to Bloomberg. The lawsuit filed Monday in Philadelphia said hackers stole the personal information of at least 13,500 Pennsylvania Uber drivers. It accuses Uber of violating a state law to notify victims of a data breach within a “reasonable time frame.” Uber acknowledged in November that for more than a year it covered up a hacking attack. Pennsylvania’s lawsuit seeks civil penalties in the millions of dollars. According to Bloomberg, Uber paid the hackers $100,000 to delete the data and conceal the breach. Lawsuits have also been filed in Los Angeles, Washington State and Chicago.

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 27-year-old west suburban man has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Chicago-based social service provider, because he said, their negligence contributed to the death of his 9-month-old daughter. The infant’s name was Cherish Freeman. Her mother, from Joliet, is accused of murdering the girl, who died on Christmas Eve. “She was a very happy baby. Always smiling.” Justin Freeman is the father of Cherish. He is suing a foster care provider called Safe Families for Children. Attorneys said Freeman and Cherish’s mother, together, put Cherish into the care of Safe Families this fall. And that the understanding was, the consent of both would be required to take her out of foster care.

But Freeman and his attorneys said Cherish’s mother alone was able to get Cherish out. And that that’s what led to her death. “It’s really just heartbreaking for me…It never would’ve happened if they would’ve not released her without my consent,” Freeman said. Freeman said he had tried to take his daughter out of foster care, but was turned down and told that both parents had to agree to it. Freeman’s lawsuit asks for damages. WBBM has asked the Safe Families organization for a response.

The Failing 111

In the UK, we have two phone numbers to call when there is a medical situation – 999 and 111.
999 is our emergency number – if you need to contact the police, fire brigade or request an ambulance – 999 is the number to call. However, 111 was introduced in 2015 to handle the non-emergency demand.
But, what is classed as a non-emergency? Well, according to the NHS, Suicide isn’t an emergency. This…
